Lexington Wildlife Removal Tip of the Month: How Do Snakes Kill Prey?

The snake will only attack to defend themselves or to subdue a prey. Compared to how the snakes have been depicted by mainstream media, the snakes are fragile. They tend to kill their prey to ensure that they will not be injured by their target. They have thin teeth that are intended to capture the prey. It is not designed for tearing meat. Their skulls are soft that can easily be crushed using enough force. When the snakes are attacking dangerous prey, they will be injecting a dose of venom that will be enough to kill or paralyze them.

Different Ways That Snakes Kill their Prey
Some snakes do not have enough venom to threaten human. In fact, this animal will prefer not to attack the humans due to the dangers we pose to them. However, when they are faced with their prey, there are various ways on how they can kill them.

Choking
They can either kill their prey through constriction or by biting them firmly on their neck. The prey will not be killed through crushing when they are constricted with the snake. Instead they will be killed through suffocation. When a constrictor bit the prey, they will be coiling their body all over their target. The grip of the snake will be tightened whenever the prey will exhale. This will prevent the animal from inhaling. There are also instances when it can prevent the beating of the heart muscle. Once the snake has a good grip on the body of the snake, they will be relocating their bite on the neck of their prey. When killing a larger prey such as crocodile, the process of constriction will take longer.

Squeezing to Death
There are also types of snakes that will squeeze their prey to death. For instance, the Woma Python will be capturing the rodent inside the burrow. This means that they will not be able to coil their body around their target. They will be pushing the rodent against the wall of the burrow until they die. This will require longer time to subdue their prey. After the battle, the snake will be riddled with wounds. Rat snake will also not constrict their prey but will be squeezing the prey using their jaws.

Envenoming
The venom of the snake will not only be able to paralyze their prey but can also kill them. This is important especially since their teeth are small and is not designed for tearing and chewing. Most of their prey will be covered with tough coverings. In case the snake will depend solely on their digestive enzyme, it will take long before they can dissolve the body of their prey. Snakes that contain venom will bite and then release their prey. They can then track their prey after they have been paralyzed. These are just some of the methods that the snakes can use to subdue their prey. By using these techniques, it will be safer for the snake to ingest their prey.
